The Julius W. Foster Fund provides scholarships to Montclair's Glenfield Middle School students who successfully complete their "Read Your Way" academic and community service requirements at HOMECOrp throughout the school year. It is named for the late Julius W. Foster, husband to Joan Foster, a HOMECorp charter trustee. Since, 1997, Joan has raised over $12,000 tiward the Foster Fund. "The Foster Fund gives me enormous satisfaction, to not only memorialize my husband's name, but to know that we do so much for the students at Glendfield," noted Mrs. Foster. "Through the Foster Fund we've been able to award 40 scholarships, which I'm very proud of. The seed money for the Foster Fund grew out of generous memorial gifts made to HOMECorp after my husband died. We wanted to find the best way to use the money." Mrs. Foster formulated the idea after watching a local access cable program that featured Glenfield special education teacher, Barry Schwartz. After meeting with Barry, a 20-year vertan Glenfield educator, the decision was made to bring HOMECorp and Glenfield literacy program. "Read Your Way" is a reading incentive program that allows all Montclair middle school studfents who have read and written reports. The book club which requires students to read and write reports on 25 books during the school year. The sponsored students complete weekly community service hours at HOMECorp throughout the school year. |
