In 1995, Homes of Montclair Ecumenical Corp (HOMECorp) created Dorothy’s Garden, a community garden at the rear of 9-9 ½ Miller Street, Montclair. Funded by a $15,000 grant from the County of Essex, HOMECorp staff and volunteers built nine raised beds that are rented to HOMECorp tenants and other community residents. Dorothy’s Garden is named and dedicated to the memory of Dorothy Clark, a former HOMECorp tenant, who worked tirelessly in the garden as she lovingly tended the plants and flowers that she grew.
Through financial assistance provided by Partners for Health and many volunteers including TerraNoble Landscape Design, Temple Ner Tamid, Montclair High School CGI and the Junior Leauge of Monclair Newark, Dorothy’s Garden has expanded to 12 plots plus compost bins, a picnic table and shed. Plots rent for $15.00 each for HOMECorp tenants and $20.00 each for community residents. Plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To rent a plot, e-mail:
