Larry Tobias and Kaitlin Stillwell pictureIn December 2013 HOMECorp sold 26 Tichenor Place to Larry Tobias and Kaitlin Stillwell, local artists and former Montclair renters. The buyers paid $199,900, the full asking price. HC originally acquired this formerly foreclosed single family home in February 2013 and completed a moderate rehabilitation.

Kaitlin, a non-profit employee, and her husband, Larry, an actor and director, never imagined that they would be homeowners particularly in a community like Montclair.

They were very encouraged by the reason-able price of the house, but they had doubts that they could afford a home with their modest salaries. However, after touring the house with Executive Director, Beverly Riddick, the Tobias/Stillwells knew that this home, that had been so lovingly re-stored, was perfect for them. In addition to HC staff, they were also encouraged by Keller Williams NJ Metro Group who took time to explain the home buying process to them in a way that empowered them and relieved their fears.

Kaitlin expressed these words as testimony in support of HC’s mission to provide housing choices in Montclair for all residents: “Every single person HC has connected us with has gone out of their way to educate us – to spend that extra time explaining terms, language and processes with us until we under-stood them; to empower us – to know more, to understand more, and to participate more fully in the process. I cannot emphasize enough what it has meant to be treated with such kindness and respect in a process that I was SURE would be constantly embarrassing me for what I didn’t know as a first-time homebuyer. We believe so strongly in what HC is trying to do. We came to Montclair because we were told it was an interesting, active and diverse com-munity – and we love it here. I’m proud to support HC’s mission to ensure that economic status doesn’t curb that diversity in the long run".
